CAO Facilities
Laboratories
The CAO is presently assigned 14 laboratories on 4 floors of the Optics Building which is located on the campus of UA-Huntsville. The total floor space of the 14 labs is approximately 6,700 sq. ft. All of the labs, except 2, are housed in the interior portion of the building which has a separate foundation to reduce mechanical vibrations. All the labs are fully stocked with optical tables, opto-mechanical hardware, and test equipment to conduct optical experiments and testing. Some of the labs are equipped for specific use, such as the Vector-Magnetograph Observatory, Contact/Non-contact Metrology, or Thin-Film Deposition but most labs are for general use to perform optical testing, prototyping, and experimental design and layout.

Fabrication
Included in the CAO lab floor space are a fully functional machine shop and a rough cutting/fabrication assembly area. Should additional fabrication machines, tooling, or fabrication personnel be required for large grants, projects or quick turnaround work, the CAO also has shop privileges of the UA-Huntsville Rotocraft Systems machine shop and their 30+ year experienced machinist. Having these resources readily available, the CAO is poised to quickly fabricate prototypes to get designs off the paper and onto the table.
The CAO is also available to offer fabrication and polishing services to local R&D companies in the Huntsville community, where a few quantities are involved, such as a prototype. By the use of a simple 2-page service agreement form in lieu of the typical paperwork associated with government funded research or grants, the CAO can bring your design or proof of concept to life at a very competitive cost and delivery. For additional information on fabrication services, please contact Ted Rogers, Fabrication Coordinator, at the CAO.
